Trends: Feathers and Leathers… the New Coach 2014 Dakotah Small Flap Crossbody

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.
― Emily Dickinson

Stuart Vevers is the new Creative Director of Coach and more importantly… Design GENIUS! I just received the new Dakotah Small Flap Crossbody bag from his 2014 Debut Collection and I’m actually speechless over its beauty. Okay, not speechless or else I wouldn’t be talking about it but I am thoroughly impressed with this new line and this bag is… breathtaking!

The leather is thick, pebbly, and smells divine. I’m not sure of the exact tanning/dyeing process but it feels and smells like vegetable-tanned and tumbled vachetta. For the detailing, embellishments, and thick leather, it’s actually a very light and comfortable bag and, as the name denotes, the adjustable strap allows the bag to be worn as a cross body. The design is reminiscent of the early “Classic Shoulder Bag” and the later “Patricia’s Legacy” bag with some definite 21st Century updates.

The main compartment of the bag is lined in Coach’s new logo lining with plenty of pockets and storage room. The flap is yet another tie to Coach’s roots with double layering of leathers with the smooth shaved suede side exposed on the inner most layer. This gives the flap a heaviness and structure with a smooth velvety feel.

The true beauty of this bag, besides the exquisite leather, is the attention to detail. The metals on the bag are a mixture of gunmetal grays and brass, allowing the bag to be worn with both silvers and golds.

The new hangtags are what first caught my eye…

…the leather feather is adorned with actual brass rivets. The metal feather is jewelry-worthy and, in fact, there is a version of the tags that can be purchased as such.

The cross-hair leather details on the sides of the bag are drawn together with a miniature, fully-functional turn lock. The whipstitching on the edges is braided through a thick metal chain. This chain wasn’t immediately apparent to me when I saw these bags online. It’s a gorgeous detail and gives the bag a sturdy look and feel.
