Restoration: Vintage Marley Hodgson Ghurka No. 59 The Scout berry Red Box Calf Leather

As many of you know, I’m becoming very fond of the original Ghurka bags. I received this one recently and it’s lovely but needed a little love. It arrived with the tab closure cut off and quite a bit of rust/verdigris on the hardware. All’s well that ends well and this one certainly ended well! It’s currently listed in my SHOP. See the work involved below! This line is so beautiful in fine box calf leather. So thin and light but, obviously, will hold up for decades!

Beautiful! Ghurka #59 The Scout

The original tab had been cut off for some reason. I cannibalized the handle from a hopeless Coach Court Bag to remake the tab.

Measured for fit.

Punched a hole and cut the slit for the brass peg to fit through. I used the measurements off of an existing Ghurka bag.

Never as easy as it looks! I had to open up the leather, remove the stiffener then resew it.

Resewn, hole cut, cut to fit.. I glued it back in to the original slot then sewed it in using the original seam as a guide.

  • I’m considering buying an old White with black/ brown seams Coach bag. You can locate photos of it on letgo. Letgo is a selling and buying online type of website.
I’ve seen the bag. It’s old but my biggest problem is where the Coach tag that is normally STAMPED onto leather on the inside is nothing more than a piece of cloth with gold writing on it. Does this mean it has been restored or is it a fake. Before I spend $100 on the bag, I’d really like to know!

    Thanks,

    • Hi Patti,

Many early bags had cloth tags, but this would be a very early Bonnie Cashin era bag. You are welcome to send me images. Otherwise, look through my guide on serials and tags and see if anything matches what you’re seeing.
